May Movie Roundup
Let's talk about what I watched last month
The movies are really back and if you haven’t made your way to a theater to see one recently, I highly encourage you to do so. There’s a lot of good stuff out and there’s even more good stuff coming. I watched a lot this month!
Movie: The Devil Wears Prada & Inception
Where To Watch: TDWP - Disney+/Hulu, Inception - rent wherever you rent
Recommend: you know it
You might be wondering why these two are paired together. Why not give them their own separate write-ups? Surely they deserve it? Reader, I’ll tell you why. I double featured these bad boys on a flight to New York City earlier this month and it was absolutely electric. Probably not one I’d think to do at home, but sometimes you see what Delta has on offer and the universe presents you with an opportunity.
TDWP is obviously a stone cold classic, so many good lines but “get us a reservation for dinner tonight at that place that got the good review” really spoke to me on this rewatch.
Inception is so good when you don’t got a cinephile in your ear telling you it’s actually mid. Pure vibes watch? Sure. But you can sign me up for the ride.
Movie: Bringing Up Baby
Where To Watch: rent wherever you rent
Recommend: absolutely
I got to watch this movie at the Metrograph Theater in NYC with my good friend Bobby. I cannot believe it’s from 1938, it’s funnier than most “comedies” made for streaming over the last 10 years. We used to be a real country with real movie stars like Katherine Hepburn and Cary Grant. I read somewhere that this movie ran over schedule and over budget because Hepburn and Grant couldn’t get through takes without laughing. I believe it.
Movie: The Batman & Top Gun: Maverick
Where To Watch: The Batman - HBO Max, Top Gun -Paramount+
Recommend: that’s total cinema, baby
Another flight (you know how they work), another absolutely rousing double feature. Shoutout to Delta Airlines for really coming through with the goods.
The Batman is quickly rising up the ranks of my favorite Batman films. I love this version of the character and how this movie plays out like a comic book. Probably time to revisit the Batman Power Rankings.
I understand that Top Gun: Maverick is military propaganda of the highest order, but I’m taking a propa ganda at my boy Tom Cruise reaching Mach 10. When he completes the mission simulation in under two minutes? I was ready to land the damn plane I was flying on myself.
Movie: Mortal Kombat II
Where To Watch: only available to rent right now, but will be on HBO Max at some point
Recommend: eh
Imagine coming home from the City That Never Sleeps and hitting a different type of city. The Universal Studios CityWalk Margaritaville for some tasty beverages with your friends before watching this movie off an edible. Sounds pretty fun right? Now replace “a different type of city” with “women.” Not so fun now, is it?
Anyway this is a movie where a lot of women (and men) get hit. Johnny Cage is pretty fun and it reminds me more of the games and ultimately is decidedly mid.
Movie: Hokum
Where To Watch: still in some theaters, you can rent on VOD
Recommend: worth a watch
I like Damian McCarthy’s other movies and enjoyed this one as well. His obsession with trinkets and doodads is well served here and Adam Scott is back playing an asshole, which he rocks at. Some pretty scary images even if the “man is scarier than monster”thing is a little on the nose.
The guy next to me in the theater did a literal Scooby-Doo ass gulp followed by an audible “yikes” at a certain scene, amazing stuff. You can’t get that at home. Well, I guess you could, but it wouldn’t be as funny.
Movie: Obsession
Where To Watch: in a movie theater baby
Recommend: hahaha yeah
I mean this in the most complimentary way possible: lmao what the FUCK dude. Amazing theater experience, scary and funny in the same scenes. This movie has blown up and has, of course, entered the take cycle, but I absolutely loved it. Stay away if you don’t like gore or are sensitive around animal stuff, but I had a rockin’ time. Excited to see the next Curry Barker projects, he’s got some juice.
Movie: Nobody 1 & Nobody 2
Where To Watch: Nobody - Amazon Prime, Nobody 2 - Netflix
Recommend: 1 yes, 2 only if you want
Believe it or not, this was another flight double feature. Nobody (2021) is a pretty fun knock-off version of John Wick with Bob Odenkirk doing a very serviceable job in the Wick role. There are some pretty fun set pieces. It’s the perfect plane movie.
Nobody 2 is just straight up not very good. Basically the same movie beat for beat just set in a resort town instead. Colin Hanks as an evil sheriff is kinda fun and Sharon Stone going NUTS as the Big Bad is something else, but overall kind of a stinker.
Movie: Marty Supreme
Where To Watch: HBO Max
Recommend: hell yeah
I know some people struggled with this movie, but I really dig it and like it more with each subsequent watch. I think some people are having trouble separating Timmy from the character of Marty Mauser, but I find his performance captivating. That ending has made me cry each time I’ve seen it so far.
This is what you want. This is what you get.
Movie: All The President’s Men
Where To Watch: think it just left HBO Max so might have to rent
Recommend: you bet
“Fuck it, let’s stand by the boys.”
A president so paranoid and concerned with personal image that he will threaten the press and insult anyone who suggests otherwise? In THIS country? Surely not.
Movie: Backrooms
Where To Watch: in the theater
Recommend: yes
It took a second for me to get on track with this thing but once I did, it really took off. The found footage aspects (especially the opening sequence & the second segment when Clark brings his co-workers to start exploring the space) were very effective.
I was really invested in the YouTube series and Parsons really nailed the vibe he brought to those here. The best parts of this movie are the long tracking shots that move through this impossibly big place, showing us room after room after room and peering into corners that are just dark enough to hide whatever monstrosities are lurking in them. Reality itself is broken and it always will be.
I saw this last Friday and have been thinking about it since. Loved the final image, even if it’s a little predictable. Like with Barker, I’m excited to see what Parsons does next. This new wave of young filmmakers has been really exciting
Movie: I Love Boosters
Where To Watch: in the theater
Recommend: yes
Pretty insane that this movie is playing in large, corporate theaters when it’s so anti-capitalistic and the irony of me seeing this at an AMC (shoutout the A-list) is not lost on me.
This was great, so funny. Keke Palmer will always be famous to me. LaKeith Stanfield on literal demon time. Unionize your workplace.
Thank you, as always, for reading Working Title. We’ll be back soon with our “Best of 2026 so far” mid-year check in. Talk to you soon!

E and I are going to see backrooms this week! He went to see obsession on his own bc I don't do all that but I'm glad everyone's' loving it
